Building A New Home

Congratulations on the purchase of your new home! It is an exciting time and at Star we work hard every day to make the selection of your products a fun experience.  We are committed to serving the needs of the new constrution customer.

How the New Construction Process Works

Appointments: You will be working with one of our designers in Star Home Concepts or in our new construction flooring show floor. The appointments are normally 2-4 hours so please schedule accordingly. Please bring your blueprints & allowance sheets and anything you may need to help you select colors or styles.

 New HomeAllowances and Overages:
In order to stay within budget, and build your house for the quoted price, your builder has set allowances for what can be spent on the different components. Your designer will know you allowances for the flooring components such as cabinets, doors, hardware, carpet, laminates, tile and lighting and can help you stay within those allowances if you wish. You are not, however, limited to just the products that fit within the allowance.

Products that fall within your allowance are included in the price of your home and carry no additional charges. For products that are over your allowance, there will be an additional charge or “overage”. You will be responsible for paying the overage. Arrangements for payment are usually made with your builder, however, in some cases the overages are paid directly to Star. We will attempt to estimate overages at the time of selection, however, these are only estimates and will be finalized once a field estimate is completed. Home Framework

Building materials selection timeline:The selection of building material such as windows, door, roofing and siding should be selected first, as these are some of the first materials that will be installed in your home.

Flooring product selection timeline: The installation of vinyl flooring, tile and carpet are the very last items to be installed in your home. This helps insure that the carpet and vinyl are not soiled or damaged by other construction procedures. However, it is important that you have all of your floor covering selections completed in plenty of time for us to work within our time line in order to get the product you want. Some products are subject to special order and back order limitations.

Use the following as a guideline to determine when to selection of the following products.

Basement is dug and foundation work being done:

-Brick
-Bath fixtures
-Cabinets
-Ext. Paint
-Roofing
-Windows
-Exterior Doors

House is being framed:

-Flooring & backsplashes
-Countertops
-Lighting

House is dried in and there is a roof installed:

-Bath hardware
-Wall coverings
-Window coverings

Changes: It is important to get the products you desire for the home of your dreams. However, keep in mind that making many changes leads to possible mis-communications and for many builders subjects you to change order fees. Please start the process early so that you have time to make choices you are comfortable with.
