Cabinet Finishing Ideas
Natural and Light Finishes Star sells select Alder, Knotty Alder, Cherry and Knotty Cherry, Hickory, Maple and Rustic Maple, Oak, and Quartersawn Oak wood and veneers. These woods vary in color and shade. Some can be found in shades of white, black, red, yellow and even green within the lighter finishes. Mineral streaks, wormholes and other natural imperfections will be more prevalent and grain textures will vary.
Premium Glaze Finish Glazing is a technique that applies a thin color coating over the top of a base stain. The glaze is applied to the wood cabinet component, allowed to rest and then hand wiped off. The application of the glaze not only modifies the base stain color, but highlights the profile areas and variations in the wood. The true beauty of glazing is the result of combining each unique and individualized piece together into a complete design. The application of glaze is specific to door types, species and base stain color.
Painted Finishes Painted finish cabinets offer endless color possibilities. Simply chose a color from the cabinet manufacturer, such as this sampling from Mid Continent, or chose any color from a paint manufacturer and we can match it. A sample will be created for you to approve! Painted finishes are a great way to add the perfect color to your room. Be aware that inherent characteristics of wood cause expansion and contraction. The opaque varnish is suspended over the top of the wood and cannot expand and contract. Therefore, the surface may show small hairline fractures or cracks on the joints and some flat surfaces. You must be prepared to accept this risk and understand that no warranty can insure against this. All other parts of the warranty will remain in effect.
Distressing or Antiquing Distressing, glazed, crackled, flyspecked, toned, shaded and other specialty finishes are the creation of an artistic touch applied by skilled artisans. The various methods that are employed to achieve this aged look lend each kitchen its own uniquely individual characteristics. Due to the nature of this procedure, each kitchen, and more specifically each individual door and drawer front will have its own identity. Because of this individuality, no two doors or drawers will have the same look. Adding or removing any of the processes from a finish will drastically alter the final appearance of that finish. Most distressing or "old world" finishes are not applied to the backs of the doors and drawer fronts.
| | Mellowing of Colors As the cabinets age, there may be slight mellowing of the color. This is due to the exposure of natural and artificial light. This is a characteristic of painted or stained furniture and cabinetry. This mellowing of the color is normal and not considered a quality defect.

Cabinet Cleaning & Care
Wood Finishes
Dust cabinets with a soft, lint-free cloth. Clean spills immediately. Use a clean, damp, soft cloth and mild soap if necessary. Wipe dry with a clean, soft, lint-free cloth. For everyday cleaning, simply wipe the surface of your cabinet with a clean, damp cloth and then dry. To remove general soil or grease, use suds from a common dish washing liquid and a damp cloth to wipe clean. Dry thoroughly. Excess moisture can damage any cabinet finish.
Laminate Finishes
Wipe the surface of your laminate cabinets with a clean, damp, soft cloth.Tough stains may be cleaned using a soft cloth dampened with mild all purpose cleaner. Clean spills immediately using a clean, damp cloth and mild soap if necessary. Whipe dry with a clean soft lint-free cloth.
Cabinet Cleaning "Don't"
- Don't use cleaner that contains bleach, ammonia (i.e. Windex) or that state on the label that they have any type of abrasive
- Don't use soap pads or steel wool
- Waxing your cabinets is not necessary. If polishing your wood cabinets is preferred, use only a fine furniture polish. Wipe off excess to avoid build-up.
- Don't use a paste wax or polish that contains silicone. The wax build-up is difficult to remove and will leave a residue that attracts dust.
Glass and Grille DoorsCommercial, ammonia free glass cleaners can be used to clean the glass. The glass can be cleaned for better access. When cleaning mounted glass, be careful not to damage the finish of the door and cabinet parts. We suggest you do not spray the cleaner directly onto the glass as it may seep into areas behind the mullions and could discolor the wood. Instead, spary a small amount of cleaner onto a lint-free cloth, then wipe the glass.
Preventative CareSelf-cleaning overs are cleaned with intense heat. If the heat gasket does not seal properly, heat may escape from the oven. Cabinets installed near a self-cleaning over can suffer finish or surface damage. To minimize the risk of damage during the cleaning cycle, we recommend removing the dorrs and drawers from cabinets that are above and adjacent to the self-cleaning oven. We recommend that heat producing appliances such as coffee makers and toaster ovens not be mounted beneath cabinets. Excess heat and moisture from these appliances can damage cabinets.
Avoiding Moisture Related ProblemsAny solid wood product will expand over time as moisture and climate conditions change. Due to these condidtions, panel expansion, joint expansion (especially on miter doors), slight bowing, door panel contraction or stile and rail expansion may occur. Certain types of wood, primarily Hard Maple, have a tendency to expand more than others. If expansion in dorrs occurs prior to installation on cainet box, air conditioning will usually return doors to normal.
